He held the office of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Defence between October 1954 and October 1956. He held the office of High Commissioner to Australia between October 1954 and October 1959.4 He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1958. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1959. He held the office of First Lord of the Admiralty between October 1959 and 1963. He held the office of Defence Secretary between 1970 and 1974. He held the office of Chairman of the Conservative Party between 1972 and 1974. He held the office of Foreign Secretary between 1979 and 1982.
