InfoHenry A. Gunderson was born in Columbia County, Wisconsin in 1878. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1900 and received a law degree from Columbia University in New York in 1903. The following year, Gunderson returned to Portage to practice law. He served as the district attorney for Columbia County for several terms and was a die-hard Progressive follower of Robert M. La Follette, Sr., although he fell out of favor with the La Follette political machine later in life. He was a progressive delegate to the 1924 Republican National Convention. In 1936, Gunderson successfully ran for lieutenant governor on the Progressive ticket. Gunderson resigned as lieutenant governor on October 16, 1937, to accept an appointment from Governor Philip La Follette to an eight-year term as a member of the state tax commission. After La Follette left office, the commission was disbanded, and Gunderson returned to private practice in Portage. He died of a heart attack in 1940.
