InfoJon was born on November 24, 1964, in Clanton, Alabama to Margaret D. Hayden and the late Judge Walter C. Hayden, Jr., of the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit. Jon attended public schools in Clanton and graduated from Chilton County High School in May 1983.

In the fall of 1983, Jon began his freshman year at the University of Alabama. In May 1987, he graduated from Alabama with a B.S. degree in Commerce and Business Administration.

Jon entered the University of Alabama School of Law in August 1987. In May 1990, he received his Juris Doctorate and, in September 1990, he became a member of the Alabama State Bar.

In August 1990, Jon moved to Selma, Alabama, where he was an Assistant District Attorney in the Fourth Judicial Circuit, which includes Bibb, Dallas, Hale, Perry, and Wilcox counties, for nearly nine years. Jon represented the people of the State of Alabama in a multitude of municipal, district, and circuit courts throughout the Fourth Circuit. Jon prosecuted a range of criminal offenses from simple misdemeanors and traffic offenses to serious violent crimes, including rape and murder. Jon was also responsible for assisting the Alabama Department of Human Resources in collecting child support.

Jon was a staff attorney for Judge James Fry on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals from February 1999 to January 2001. Jon reviewed and researched legal issues raised by defendants that had been convicted of a range of crimes, from misdemeanor offenses to capital murder convictions. From this research, Jon drafted legal memoranda and opinions for Judge Fry’s review.

In January 2001, Jon was appointed as an Assistant Attorney General in the Capital Litigation Division. As an assistant attorney general, Jon has represented the people of Alabama in circuit courts across the State and in the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.

In November 2004, Jon married the former Janan Sackett. Janan is an 8th grade Language Arts teacher at Millbrook Middle School. Jon and Janan live in the historic Cloverdale-Idlewild neighborhood in Montgomery and are active in their neighborhood association. They attend St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Currently in his eighth year as an Assistant Attorney General, Jon seeks to continue to serve the people of Alabama by applying his vast criminal law experience to the office of Judge on the Alabama Court of Appeals, Place 2.
