InfoJim Burkee was born in San Diego, California on January 11, 1968 while his father was on tour in Vietnam aboard the USS Kearsarge. His mother, Jan, was raised on a small farm in Pleasantdale, Nebraska, where his grandfather had returned after completing his 35th mission as a tailgunner on a B-24 during World War II. But it was in San Diego that Jim’s parents met one Sunday in church while his father was on shore leave.

Jim’s dad, Dennis Burkee, was born in Milwaukee to Bob and Gerry Burkee, the second of their seven children. Bob had served as a combat MP during World War II in Italy and North Africa, so Dennis dropped out of high school to join the navy during Vietnam. After he and Jan married in 1967, the family returned to Wisconsin, where Dennis joined Mellowes Company, a division of what is now Charter Manufacturing. Like his father before him, Dennis started with an entry-level job at Mellowes, working his way up, by 1977, to manager of the company’s National Lock Washer facility in northern New Jersey.

At home, Jim’s mom was busy with Jim and his two sisters, Heather and Katie. With small children of her own at home, Jan still opened her house and heart to foster children, bringing nearly twenty through the home during Jim’s childhood.

Jim’s dad was killed in an auto accident in New Jersey in May, 1978. Jan brought the family back to Milwaukee, where she raised her children as a single mother. The family joined St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Allis, where Jim was educated until 1982.

Jim attended what was then Concordia College in Mequon from 1986 to 1990, where he graduated with degrees in business and marketing. It was there, while co-starring with her in a production of Guys and Dolls, that Jim met the love of his life, Susan. Jim and Susan were married in October, 1991 in her parents’ home town in Door County.

Jim took the values passed down to him by his parents in pursuing his career over the next decade. He worked in the automotive industry, then returned to school to complete a history degree in 1994 while working a night job at UPS. He then worked in temp jobs while his wife, Susan, was in graduate school (MBA, international marketing, New York University). Jim was given a fellowship to the Graduate School at Northwestern University, where he studied American political history for seven years, receiving his Ph.D. in 2003.

Jim taught at Concordia College in New York for three years before returning to his home in Wisconsin in December 2003 when he was offered a position at his alma mater, Concordia University Wisconsin. In 2007 he was advanced to the rank of Associate Professor of History.

Jim and Susan lived in Port Washington until June 2007, when they moved to Cedarburg. They are members of First Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cedarburg, where their children, Christian (9), Grace (7) and Lydia (4) attend school. Susan is a communications consultant for Assurant Health.

Jim has authored several articles advocating responsible government, appearing in USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, The Hill, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and more.

He continues, with this campaign, to call America to hold its leaders responsible, promoting the same values that made America great – and that shaped his life.
