| Info | Alderman Ashanti Hamilton is a native of Milwaukee. Born the eldest of six, he was a natural born leader. He grew up on East Auer on the North side of Milwaukee. He was a golden child filled with hope and concern about humanity. Ashanti attended Riverside High School where he was a leader in many activities such as track and football. He was well known for his activism at an early age. When a classmate of his was seriously hurt he organized his fellow classmates to get a traffic light installed to help students cross the street safely. Ashanti is well known for being in the first "Hang Tough Milwaukee" documentary in which he spoke out against the abuse of drugs and its negative affects on his family and community.
After high school, he attended Marquette University. He joined several organizations such as Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. He was apart of and work for Marquette's Educational Opportunity Program and the Upward Bound Program. He continued his activism through various forms of expression like poetry, the Milwaukee 10,000 Man March, and the Million Man March working directly with local and national organizers. Ashanti received his B.A. degree in English and became a teacher. He went beyond the call of duty with his students becoming an advisor, mentor, and friend. He coached track and football assisting many of his athletes to reach their full potential.
Ashanti earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Thurgood Marshall Law School at Texas Southern University. He formally worked as an assistant to former first district alderman Marvin Pratt, former Common Council President and Acting Mayor, where he worked on many assignments for first district residents. Ashanti is married with three children.
