InfoPhil Steck has spent his career fighting for people’s rights as a civil rights and labor attorney. As our representative in Washington, Phil will continue that same passionate advocacy for working families.

Phil decided to run for Congress because he believes we need a real change of direction in Washington. That change can only occur if the people of the Capital Region have a leader who will listen to our concerns and work for our interests.

Phil has spoken out for an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, a single-payer system of health care to assure the quality affordable health care we deserve, protecting Social Security and Medicare, and making college more affordable. Phil will work to bring more jobs and more Federal dollars to the Capital Region to stimulate our regional economy.

Just as importantly, Phil has proven throughout his career that he backs up his words with actions. A long-time grass roots activist, Phil helped lead the Colonie Democratic Party to end 100 years of Republican rule in town government. Phil’s message of change resonated with people across the community and Town Hall is now finally an “open house” for the people. In addition, as an Albany County Legislator, Phil Steck puts the needs of his constituents first and insists that government work for people, rather than the other way around.

Phil’s values, his commitment to family, and his strong sense of community were instilled in him by his parents. Phil grew up in the Town of Colonie. His father, Ernie, was a well known and respected football coach and director of athletics at Albany Academy. His mother, Roselyn, taught 7th grade social studies at Albany’s Hackett Middle School. Phil graduated as Valedictorian from Albany Academy. Phil is married to Tricia Steck, a 10th grade teacher at Rensselaer High School and they have two children, Alexandra (12), and Aaron (9).

A magna cum laude graduate from Harvard University, Phil went on to receive his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. While a student at Harvard, Phil served as Lyndon B. Johnson Intern for Queens Congressman Benjamin S. Rosenthal.

After graduating from law school, Phil began his service to people by prosecuting criminals as an Assistant District Attorney in Rensselaer County under retired Supreme Court Justice James Canfield, and as an Assistant District Attorney in New York County under Robert Morgenthau. Phil is currently a Partner in one of Downtown Albany’s oldest law firms, Cooper Erving & Savage.
