| Info | Michael Bendas was born in Campaign, IL, the eldest of five children. The Bendas family moved to the southeast side of Chicago where he was raised until the family relocated to Beverly just before his graduation from Bowen High School. Mike spent a couple of years at the University of Illinois (Champaign) studying Chemical Engineering before he was accepted at the US Military Academy at West Point.
After Mike graduated from West Point, he served for 30 years in our US Army. A graduate of the Army Ranger, Airborne, Jumpmaster and Aviator courses, he served on active duty supporting the Korean DMZ and the East German and Czech borders while in Cavalry units during the Cold War for most of his nearly eight years of active duty. Then he spent 22 years in the Army reserves culminating his career as a Brigade Commander of all Army Reserve aviation in the nation (2100 reservists, 400 full time workers, $2 billion of equipment spanning 12 states across the nation). Michael Bendas achieved the rank of Colonel before his retirement, was a Master Army Aviator, and had received numerous awards including two Legions of Merit.
After he left active duty, Mike remained in Germany for two years trying, unsuccessfully, to fight the German bureaucracy to establish the first non-governmental airline business in Europe. He returned to Chicago to work for the First National Bank of Chicago, Household International and The Signature Group, a subsidiary of Montgomery Ward. For the last ten years he has been a consultant working at improving the efficiency of various company’s operations, and in reengineering their processes to improve their competitive position. Mike was one of the first document imaging experts in the nation, and testified in two states before their legislative committees as an expert witness.
He has traveled to over 35 nations from Burma to Egypt to Iran to most of Europe and much of the Far East. Michael has seen poverty and has seen what democracy can bring to a nation. He has seen failed states as well where they were once a thriving nation but have fallen into a virtually non-functional entities.
Michael Bendas is a doer who thinks “outside of the box”. He is a strong fiscal conservative who believes that our government’s lack basic financial discipline is putting our future is at risk if we do not address this issue at all levels of government. He supports empowering our teachers while also holding them accountable for the results that are equitably measured. Mike wants to see America take a lead in the development of nuclear fusion power generation, an inexpensive, clean energy source with no byproducts and whose materials cannot be used to make a weapon of mass destruction. We need to make fusion a national, ten year initiative analogous to the project to put a man on the moon within a decade.
