ACTION, ACTION, ACTION. That's what you can hear Social and Spiritual Activist, Ned Coll say as he shuffles his papers on his disheveled desk, looking for his missing letter he spent the past night writing.
Ned's life has been one of social and religious activism.
Ned was educated at Fairfield University where the Jesuits taught him to be inner-directed, tending to one's spiritual life. In 1964 he founded the Revitalization Corps in honor of John and Robert Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Its objective was, and is, to tutor city kids and bring families from the city and the suburbs together. At one time the Corps had branches in Harlem and Boston. It still thrives today.
In the 1970's he led children from the city on walks through the private beaches on Long Island Sound to push for the opening of the shoreline for all. He walked the high-tide line from Stonington to Greenwich. Others have since achieved breakthroughs on the beach issue.
In recent years, Ned has walked over 6000 miles to promote spirituality and bring to the public consciousness the need for more men to enter the Catholic priesthood.
A great turning point occurred in Ned's life on Pentecost Sunday in 1990. Sitting alone in his five-room cabin, images started appearing on his television set - pictures from his past life and others of the evil things happening in the world today. He saw children suffering in urban areas and other people pretending the children didn't exist. He didn't turn the channels- the images just appeared one after another. He heard a voice saying that God is angry at America - that He is angry at our greed. He also came to the realization that God considers sex sacred and abhors abortion. He came to realize that prayer is essential to our world. Coining the term "God activism" - meaning attention to God in a time when television and the electronic media are captivating people - Ned is working tirelessly to serve God and his fellow human beings.
"His primary concern is promoting the work of the Lord"
