Info | HARDIN, Martin D., (cousin of Benjamin Hardin and father of John J. Hardin), a Senator from Kentucky; born along the Monongahela River, western Pennsylvania, June 21, 1780; moved with his parents to Kentucky in 1786; pursued an academic course; attended Transylvania Seminary, Lexington, Ky.; studied law; admitted to the bar and practiced in Richmond and Frankfort, Ky.; member, State house of representatives 1805-1806, 1812, 1818-1820, serving as speaker 1819-1820; secretary of State of Kentucky 1812-1816; served as major in the War of 1812; appointed and subsequently elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William T. Barry and served from November 13, 1816, to March 3, 1817; died in Frankfort, Ky., October 8, 1823; interment on his farm in Franklin County; reinterment in State Cemetery, Frankfort, Ky.
