InfoRichard Arthur Snowden was born on May 16, 1951 to Robert W. and Doris E. Snowden, life long residents of Hornell, New York. His father was a 42-year employee of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Rick is a 1973 graduate of Alfred University receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science.
Upon graduation, Richard joined The Hearthstone Insurance Company, later to become the Combined Insurance Company of New York, as an Agent for the company in Monroe County. By March of 1974 Richard was promoted to Territory Manager for the Olean, New York area, and at age 22 was one of the youngest persons to hold that position. In 1975 he was promoted to District Manager for Erie County, New York. His association with the Combined Group of Companies continued until 1979 when he worked in the Life Insurance division of the company in Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia.

In addition to the many awards received for his stellar performance with Combined, including Manager of the Year Award in 1975, much of Richard's business acumen was gleaned from the teachings of W. Clement Stone, founder of Combined Insurance Company of America. Richard considers W. Clement Stone to be his mentor and the principles of Stone's book Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude permeate his business philosophy and his everyday life.
Upon leaving Combined in 1979, Richard ventured into business on his own using the principles learned from W. Clement Stone, Napoleon Hill and others. He bought and operated nightclubs in a number of cities that grew to include Washington, D.C., Fort Lauderdale, Buffalo, Montreal, Savannah and Las Vegas.
His financial success has given him the opportunity to give something back to the community. This has been witnessed most recently by his contributions to the Hornell Public Library, the "Save the Town Clock" effort in Wellsville, the Southern Tier United Way Campaign and the donation of his extensive collection of Keith Whitley memorabilia to the Highland Museum and Discovery Center in Ashland, Ky.

Political Background

Snowden first became active in Republican politics in 1964 when he was a volunteer for Goldwater for President and manned the local headquarters. His interest began, however, four years earlier when in 1960, at the age of 9, he visited the Nixon - Lodge Campaign headquarters and was struck with the "political bug" which has remained with him to this day.
In 1966 he served as a Page at the New York State Republican Convention in Rochester. (Click Here To View Photo)
In 1968 he was named Chairman of the New York State Teenage Republicans. He served later that year as a Public Relations Page at the National Republican Convention in Miami Beach. After the convention, Richard was very active in the Nixon for President Campaign.
In 1970 he was the Western New York College Co-Coordinator for the Re-Election of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller.
In the summer of 1971, while a student at Alfred University, he interned at the GOP headquarters in Monroe County under Chairman William F. Dwyer.
Richard's first venture for public office was in 1976 when he was the Republican & Conservative Party nominee for Congress in what was formerly, the 39th Congressional District.
Though unsuccessful in the General Election, this setback did not deter his interest in politics. He set out to prove his abilities in business and for the past 25 years has had a hand in Republican politics in Virginia, Nevada as well as New York.
In 1988 he was a Delegate to the Republican State Convention in Virginia.
In 1989, he was active in the successful primary campaign of Virginia Republican Gubernatorial Candidate, Marshall Coleman, and served on his Finance Committee for the Fall Campaign.
In the 90's, Snowden became a major financial contributor to the Republican National Committee and to candidates around the country. He is a Life Member of the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle and a Life Member of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Honors and Memberships

In 2001, on the occasion of Rick's 50th birthday and the opening of the family home, Maplemere, Mayor Shawn Hogan proclaimed Richard A. Snowden day in Hornell and gave him a key to the City.
Snowden was given the Honorary Title of Kentucky Colonel by Kentucky Governor Paul E. Patton in 1999 for his work creating the Keith Whitley Memorial Foundation.
He serves on the President's Council of the Richard M. Nixon Library and Birthplace Foundation.
He is a member of the Titanic Historical Society and a member of the National Historic Preservation Trust. (Click Here To View Photo)
He is a Life Member of the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee and a Life Member of the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle.
He is also member of the Chemung Valley Region Antique Auto Club, the Hornell Rotary Club, Life Member of The Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society and the Hornell United Methodist Church.

Hobbies

Snowden's hobbies include collecting antique mechanical banks, memorabilia from the Pan-American Exposition of 1901, antique and classic cars, a complete collection of Kentucky Derby Mint Julip Commemorative glasses, and most recently a collection of checks signed by nearly every President from George Washington to George H.W. Bush, all framed to museum standards according to the period, and what is hoped will be a one -of-a-kind collection for future generations to enjoy.

Personal

Rick is married to the former Danielle Bracken and they have three children: Jacob, Aubrey and Robert. The Snowdens reside at 175 Nottingham Terrace in Buffalo, New York.
