| Info | CLARK, John Chamberlain, a Representative from New York; born in Pittsfield, Mass., January 14, 1793; pursued preparatory studies; was graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., in 1811; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Hamilton, N.Y.; moved to Bainbridge, Chenango County, about 1818; district attorney 1823-1827; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth Congress (March 4, 1827-March 3, 1829); elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1837-March 3, 1839), but changed his politics on the appearance of President Van Buren’s message in 1837 favoring an independent Treasury; reelected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1839-March 3, 1843); served as First Auditor of the Treasury, August 2, 1849-October 31, 1849; moved to Chemung County, N.Y., and engaged in the lumber business; died in Elmira, Chemung County, N.Y., October 25, 1852; interment in St. Peter’s Churchyard, Bainbridge, N.Y.
