| Info | Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. was elected to the United States House of Representatives November 7, 2000. Currently, he represents the First District of South Carolina, which includes all or portions of Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, Georgetown and Horry counties. Presently, Henry Brown is serving his fifth term in the 111th Congress, and he serves on three committees and six subcommittees: the Committee on Natural Resources: Subcommittees on Fisheries, Wildlife and Oceans (Ranking Republican Member) and National Parks, Forests and Public Lands; the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure: Subcommittees on Highways and Transit, Water Resources, and Railroads; and the Committee on Veterans' Affairs: Subcommittee on Health.
A member of numerous Congressional caucuses, the Congressman is Co-Chairman of the Port Security Caucus, the Congressional Friends of Canada Caucus, the Coastal Caucus, and the Congressional Shellfish Caucus.
Congressman Brown started his political career serving on the Hanahan Planning Commission and Hanahan City Council. In 1985, he was elected to the SC House of Representatives and served continuously through 2000. He was appointed to the House Ways and Means Committee in 1989, and in November 1994, he became the first Republican ever elected to serve as Chairman of Ways and Means. As Chairman, Congressman Brown was responsible for a $4.6 billion budget, and he led the fight for the largest tax cut in the history of the state. In its fourth year, 1998, this property tax relief totaled $240 million. Further, during his tenure on Ways and Means, Congressman Brown was also elected Chairman of the Joint Tax Study Commission and served as a member of the Budget and Control Board, the Legislative Audit Council, and the Joint Bond Review Committee.
Since being elected to the US House of Representatives in 2000, Congressman Brown has been honored by numerous groups for his conservative, pro-business, pro-military, and common sense voting record. He was awarded the Order of the Palmetto in 2000, which is the highest honor a civilian can receive from the state of South Carolina. In 2005, he received the College of Charleston's Founders' Medal. Also, he has received honorary doctorates from The Citadel, College of Charleston, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston Southern University, and Coastal Carolina University.
Congressman Brown is a retired vice-president with Piggly Wiggly Corporation. He is married to the former Billye Beaver, and they have three children and five grandchildren. He is an active member of Cooper River Baptist Church.
