Info | Mark was born and raised in a working class family in Allston-Brighton. For four generations, Mark’s family has lived, worked, raised their children and retired in Allston-Brighton. Mark’s Great-Grandfather immigrated here from San Donato, Italy in the early 1920s. Along with his five sons and a few friends his Great-Grandfather organized Local 39 Curb setters and Pavers which eventually merged into Local 151 Laborers. Mark and his sister were raised in Allston-Brighton by his single mother Louise Rufo. Without a father, Mark learned at an early age about the importance of community. Mark knows that a good community can make a difference in the lives of its citizens because Allston-Brighton made a difference in his life. It is a simple lesson that has shaped his entire life.
Growing up, he was always involved in youth organizations and sports. Mark still remembers the elation he felt when the staff and coaches of the Allston-Brighton YMCA Street Hockey Program recognized him with the Most Valuable Player Award for the season. He credits his success to the guidance and encouragement provided by his community leaders, teachers and coaches. As an adult, he has tried to give back to the community that gave him so much.
With hard work and determination Mark became the first person in his family to earn a college degree, graduating with a B.S. from Suffolk University. Mark worked his way through High School and College. He worked in the kitchen at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, he was a custodian at the Kennedy Memorial Hospital, which later became the Franciscan Children’s Hospital and he also delivered flowers for Minihane’s Florist.
In 1985, Mark met his wife, Laura. They will be celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary this coming February. Though not originally from Allston-Brighton, Laura immediately fell in love with the community, and together they decided that it would be the best place to start a family. It was important to Mark that his two boys, Michael and Matthew, have the same family and community support he received throughout his childhood. He also wanted to be close to his mother through her elderly years.
As an adult Mark never forgot the importance of community. He has a lifetime of service and experience representing the needs and concerns of youth, families, and seniors. Now he is the best choice to represent us.
