| Info | Cecil J. Picard was the appointed Louisiana state superintendent of education from 1996 until his death, which followed a 21-month fight against the deadly Lou Gehrig's disease. Picard was also a former Democratic member of both houses of the Louisiana State Legislature. He was originally from the village of Maurice in Vermilion Parish in southwestern Louisiana, having previously been a teacher, coach, and principal.
