Born in Middletown, Connecticut, daughter of future President Woodrow Wilson and his first wife, Ellen Wilson. At that time, Woodrow Wilson was a professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown.
The family moved to Princeton NJ when Eleanor was a child; she spent her later childhood in the NJ Governor's mansion.
Married William G. McAdoo 5/7/1914 in the White House. McAdoo, who was then serving as Secretary of the Treasury, was 26 years older than her. Her sister Jessie had been married the previous year in the White House to Francis B. Sayre.
Eleanor McAdoo divorced McAdoo on 7/17/1934. They had separated in 12/1933, soon after McAdoo returned to Washington DC after being elected to the US Senate. He wanted to spend all his time in Washington DC, but Eleanor's health there suffered from the DC climate. She wanted to live in California where she could pursue her artistic interests. She won custody of their two daughters and $6,000 per year alimony [NYT 7/18/1934]. The speed of their divorce, granted within one hour of the filing, was challenged but not overturned [NYT 7/24/1934].
After her divorce, Eleanor began to write her memoirs, published in 1937 under the title The Woodrow Wilsons. The book was a sympathetic statement about how her relationship with Pres. Wilson changed during his presidency. [NYT 4/7/1967].
Of Pres. Wilson's three daughters, Eleanor was the last survivor. She was described as "the one closest to him temperamentally and ideologically," continuing throughout her life to write in favor of liberal policies and internationalism [NYT 4/7/1967].
Though she had maintained a life out of the spotlight and shunned reporters, she attended a 1959 luncheon for the children of US Presidents [NYT 4/7/1967].
Late in her life, she purchased a Spanish Eclectic cottage along the coast of California. [NYT 4/7/1967].
McAdoo died 4/5/1967 at her home in Montecito, California at age 77. The day following her death was the 50th anniversary of US entry into World War I [NYT 4/7/1967].
They had two daughters:
Ellen Wilson McAdoo (born 21 May 1915, Washington, D.C., died 22 December 1946, Los Angeles County, California), who married the actor Rafael L. De Onate (divorced 1937).
Mary Faith McAdoo (born 6 April 1920, New York City, died 14 November 1988 in Santa Barbara County, California), who married (1) Gerald James and (2) Nicholas Haddad
