Info | PATTON, John, Jr., (son of John Patton and brother of Charles Emory Patton), a Senator from Michigan; born in Curwensville, Clearfield County, Pa., October 30, 1850; prepared for college at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.; graduated from Yale College in 1875 and from the law department of Columbia College, New York City, in 1877; moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1878; admitted to the bar the same year and commenced the practice of law; appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Francis B. Stockbridge and served from May 5, 1894, to January 14, 1895, when a successor was elected and qualified; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1895 to fill the vacancy; banker; member and later president of the Board of Library Commissioners of Grand Rapids; died in Grand Rapids, Mich., on May 24, 1907; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.
