Info | FOSTER, Henry Allen, a Representative and a Senator from New York; born in Hartford, Conn., May 7, 1800; moved to Cazenovia, N.Y., when a boy; attended the common schools; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1822 and commenced practice in Oneida County, N.Y.; surrogate to Oneida County 1827-1831, 1835-1839; supervisor of the town of Rome N.Y., 1829-1830, 1833-1834; member, State senate 1831-1834; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1837-March 3, 1839); resumed the practice of law in Rome; appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Silas Wright, Jr., and served from November 30, 1844, to January 27, 1845, when a successor was elected and qualified; judge of the supreme court for the fifth district 1864-1872; president of the board of trustees of Hamilton College; vice president of the American Colonization Society; died in Rome, N.Y., May 11, 1889; interment in Rome Cemetery.
