Judge Gene E.K. Pratter was born in 1949 in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in Southern California, earned an A.B. from Stanford University in 1971 and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1975. From 1975 to 2004, Judge Pratter was in private practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania engaging in general civil litigation with a concentration in professional liability matters. She served as general counsel to a multi-state 500-lawyer firm (Duane Morris) from 1999-2004. Judge Pratter was inducted to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on June 18, 2004.
Before joining Reed Smith in 1989, Short worked as a prosecutor in the Philadelphia district attorney's office, including several years as a homicide prosecutor.
