InfoHannah Hoes Van Buren, born Hannah Hoes (March 8, 1783 - February 5, 1819) was the wife of the eighth United States President, Martin Van Buren, from 1807 until her death. She was also one of his maternal cousins. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 35, 17 years before her husband was elected to the presidency.

Because she died before Martin became President, she was never the First Lady. Martin Van Buren never remarried and was one of the few Presidents not to be married while in office. During his term, his daughter-in-law Angelica Van Buren performed the ceremonial duties of First Lady.

Mrs. Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, New York and died in Albany, New York. She was buried in Kinderhook.

She was born to Johannes Dircksen Hoes (1753-1789), and Maria Quakenbush (1754-1852). She and her future husband, Martin Van Buren, grew up together. Hannah Van Buren was taught in a local Kinderhook school by master Vrouw Lange. Like her husband, Dutch was her first language.
