Southern Connecticut State University has experienced a long and productive period of growth and renewal under the presidency of Michael J. Adanti. As Mr. Adanti begins his 18th year at the helm, Southern's enrollment is surging, the University enjoys fiscal health, and it has launched an exciting new development campaign and the largest capital construction program in the University's 108-year history. New academic initiatives, prestigious awards for faculty and students and national honors for Southern sports teams have also highlighted Mr. Adanti's tenure and brought the University increasing regional recognition for excellence in higher education.
Mr. Adanti's appointment as president in 1984 was a unique event. He became the first Southern Connecticut State University graduate to be named president of his alma mater and the first Southern graduate to become president of any university.
Born in 1940, Mr. Adanti graduated from Southern in the class of '63, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and science. Following graduation, he taught in the Ansonia school district for three years. In 1966, he was awarded a Master of Science degree in student personnel from the University of Bridgeport and shortly afterward was named assistant dean of students at Southern. In 1971, he earned a sixth year professional diploma in educational administration from Southern.
Mr. Adanti's long association with Southern has given him an opportunity to view the University from a variety of administrative perspectives. From 1977-79 he served as Southern's first dean of personnel administration. And before being named president he was called upon twice - as chief executive officer/executive vice president and as acting president - to lead the University through difficult times.
Prior to assuming the presidency, Mr. Adanti served from 1981-84 as vice president for university affairs for the Connecticut State University system, which comprises four separate university campuses: in Danbury, Willimantic, New Britain and New Haven. He also enjoyed a successful political career, with two terms from 1973-77 as mayor of Ansonia, Connecticut, a city of 22,000 people. In 1976, he ran as the Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from the 5th Congressional District.
Mr. Adanti has also involved himself in a variety of off-campus and community efforts. A patron of the arts, he is on the board of directors of the New Haven Symphony and has established Southern as a major supporter of New Haven's Long Wharf Theatre and International Festival of Arts and Ideas. He is also a board member of the Naugatuck Valley's Birmingham Utilities water company and the Connecticut Police Foundation, chairing the foundation's scholarship committee. In Spring 2000, he received the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Brotherhood Award, which annually honors those who help to promote better relations, tolerance and understanding among various racial, ethnic and cultural groups.
A resident of Hunington, Mr. Adanti has been married for 38 years to his wife Linda, an award-winning art teacher. He is the father of two children, Kristen and Michael.
