Info | Warren James "Puggy" Moity Sr. of New Iberia, a colorful fixture of Louisiana's political past, died Thursday morning. He was 73.
A family member said Friday he died of a heart attack.
Perhaps best known for his televised criticisms of statewide and local politicians in the early 70s, Moity often ran for more than one office at once. In 1971, he qualified to run for the governor's office and a state Senate seat in the same election.
In that campaign, Moity raised allegations that Edwards was gay.
Edwards used humor to squelch that rumor.
At a campaign gathering at the Capitol House Hotel in Baton Rouge, Edwards walked up to Moity and planted a big kiss on his cheek.
