born in Wausa, Knox County, Nebr., February 20, 1915; attended the Wausa public schools, and Wayne State Teachers College, Wayne, Nebr., 1933-1935; B.A., University of Nebraska, 1937; J.D., the law school of the same university, 1939; special agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1939-1944; United States Naval Reserve, Pacific Theater, 1944-1946, discharged with rank of lieutenant (jg.); admitted to the Nebraska bar in 1941; admitted to the California bar in 1949 and commenced practice in Los Angeles; assistant United States attorney, 1949-1951; California State assemblyman, 1963-1967; State senator, 1967-1971; delegate to California State Democratic conventions, 1960-1974; delegate to Democratic National Convention, 1968; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-second and to the five succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1971, until his resignation March 9, 1982, to be an associate justice of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division Three, Los Angeles, Calif.; died September 12, 1998, in Monterey Park, Calif.
