InfoMACKEY, Levi Augustus, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Whitedeer Township, Union County, Pa., November 25, 1819; moved with his parents in 1829 to Milton, Pa.; received an academic education and was graduated from Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., in 1837; studied law in Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa.; was admitted to the bar in 1840 and practiced law in Lock Haven, Pa., from 1841 until 1855; engaged in banking and was elected president of the Lock Haven Bank in 1855; delegate to the Whig National Convention in 1852 and to the Democratic National Convention in 1872; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1868 to the Forty-first Congress; mayor of Lock Haven, Pa., in 1870; served as president of the Bald Eagle Valley Railroad Co. and of several other corporations; member of the board of trustees of the normal school at Lock Haven Pa., from 1870 until the time of his death; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and Forty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1879); chairman, Committee on Revolutionary Pensions (Forty-fifth Congress); resumed his former business pursuits; died in Lock Haven, Pa., February 8, 1889; interment in Highland Cemetery.
