InfoCLARENCE ARCH DECKER
Former Colorado State Senator, Clarence Arch Decker, passed away on October 2, 2004 in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was a resident of Montrose for the past 11 years. Arch is survived by his wife, Lois, seven children-sons Randall, Daniel and Stuart Decker; and daughters Victoria (Miller), Juliette (Perez), Lorraine (Lori Challis), Jennifer (Payne), 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Family was of great importance to him and he considered his greatest achievement in life to be that all his children know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

Clarence Arch Decker was born July 22, 1932 in Arkansas City, Kansas and graduated from high school in Rawlins, Wyoming. He had an excellent education with a scholarship to the University of Wyoming, three appointments to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, a graduate degree in Public Administration and Juris Doctor (law) degrees from the University of Denver.

A practicing lawyer in Denver and Montrose for 45 years, he was a consummate trial attorney and lost only 2 jury trials in his entire career. Although he represented many prominent and wealthy clients and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, represented clients in many states and was the first nonresident lawyer to be permitted to address the Court on the Island of Jersey, Channel Islands, he also represented with care and concern his many other clients in both civil and criminal litigation in virtually all fields of law. He despised injustice, and put his heart, soul, and genius IQ into solving problems and representing in court many who could not pay for his services.

In 1962 Arch was elected to the Colorado State House of Representatives and to the Colorado Senate in 1964, 1968 and 1974, representing Southwest Denver. He was the Minority Leader in the Senate for many of those years.

In addition to his law practice and political career, he was involved in and operated almost 50 businesses, including Cottonwood Hill Alcoholic and Drug Rehabilitation Center in Arvada, and Decker-Bishop Real Estate Investment Company. He was owner and manager of His People, a Christian newspaper in the greater Denver area.

One of the great burdens of his heart was that churches work together for the central message of Christianity, the hope of life eternal through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for those who chose to believe, and he continued to work and expend much of his personal finances toward that end throughout his life. He was known for his sharing with everyone-waitresses, clients, airline passengers-about how to know Christ as their personal Savior through a small booklet called ""The Four Spiritual Laws"" written and published by Campus Crusade for Christ.

Arch was involved in many charities. He co-founded Frontier Boys' Camp near Divide, CO for juvenile delinquents; co-founded and served as Chairman of the Board of the STEP Foundation to develop and implement strategies for Christians to help the poor in inner cities throughout the United States. This Board included such prominent people as Nelson Bunker Hunt, Clint Murchison, Dr. E. V. Hill, Holly Coors, and Mary Crowley. He co-founded Harvesting in Spanish, an orphanage ministry in El Salvador, and served as its chairman for more than 25 years. He served to the present as a National Board Member of Good News Jail and Prison Ministry which furnishes Christian chaplains throughout Colorado, 42 other states and countries around the world. He was an active supporter of many other Christian ministries, particularly Summit Ministries of Manitou Springs, CO and Campus Crusade for Christ, Orlando, Florida. He was a long time member of the Council for National Policy.

Clarence Arch Decker served in the U. S. Army and interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery. A memorial service is planned on Thursday, October 7 in Montrose at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Funeral Service will be in Denver on Friday October 8 at 11 a.m. at the Denver First Church of the Nazarene, 3800 E. Hampden Ave, Englewood, CO.
