Meet Don Wiviott
Don Wiviott, 51, is a community leader and small businessman who builds environmentally-friendly live/work spaces in his hometown of Santa Fe, New Mexico. His leadership as a green builder earns state-wide notice. The Albuquerque Journal writes, Don’s communities “have stood the test of time”. The New Mexico Business Weekly refers to “The Lofts” as “Cool live/work spaces for the 21st century professional” and “one of the hippest real estate developments in the Rio Grande Corridor”.

An Entrepreneur

His vocation as a builder began in 1995 when Don purchased an abandoned eight-acre site in Santa Fe. He overcame zoning and permit hurdles to create an energy-efficient live/work community called “The Lofts”. Today it is home to over 100 businesses and residents, including numerous artists and technology companies. In 2004, Don completed another landmark green project: “The Lofts at Marquez Place”. This community features cisterns for water recycling and energy-efficient living and business spaces.

Don’s career also includes achievements with IBM, financing entrepreneurial companies, manufacturing, and clean water products. After 15 months on the job at a national wholesale distributor and manufacturer of agricultural and marine trailer parts, Don was promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer. In this role, he restored the company’s profitability and nearly doubled the sales volume in less than three years.

His interest in water treatment began early in Don’s work-life, after a season working on a sailing vessel in the Mediterranean. His experience there made him familiar with the technology to take salt out of seawater to make it drinkable. He later used this knowledge to start up a U.S.-based distribution company in Florida for a full line of desalination and clean-water products. This business grew into a dealer and service network on the Eastern Seaboard, the Gulf Coast and South America.

A Civic Organizer

Don is an active civic organizer in New Mexico, and is a member of the Santa Fe Area Chamber of Commerce, the New Mexico Green Builder’s Council and the Santa Fe Alliance. In Santa Fe, he serves as the Chairman of the Mayor’s Economic Development Review Committee. Statewide, he is an appointee to the Governor’s “Our Communities, Our Future” Task Force. When the 2007 New Mexico Legislature enacted legislation to promote clean energy Don was a lobbyist on solar initiatives..

Education

During college, he worked part-time in construction as a member of the Laborer’s International Union. He holds a BA in Government and Environmental Studies from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Harvard where he studied finance and entrepreneurial management.

Don's Family

Don’s paternal grandparents were immigrants from Belarus and both of Don’s parents were veterans of the United States Navy. Don’s father served in the military for 28 years, first as a combat officer then as an attorney.

Don’s wife Kelley Owen Wiviott, 48, is a prominent Santa Fe realtor. They share their lives with two children: Jonathan Owen, age 26, and Hillary Owen, now 24 years old. The family also has a four-year-old dog named Scooter, who often joins Don when he drives his hybrid car around town.
