InfoCommissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz was first elected to the District 12 seat of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners in September 2002. Commissioner Diaz was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, but has called Sweetwater, Florida home for more than 30 years. He is happily married to his wife Maria and they have three daughters.

Commissioner Diaz graduated from Coral Park Senior High School and attended Miami-Dade Community College. He served our country in the United States Marine Corps on active and reserve duty for six years. In 1986, he began his career in public service as Chairman of the City of Sweetwater Police Retirement Trust Fund Board, where he served until 1991. From 1992 through 1999, he served on the City of Sweetwater Commission, a majority of that time as President and as Vice Mayor. In May of 1999, Commissioner Diaz was elected Mayor of the City of Sweetwater.

As Mayor of Sweetwater, Commissioner Diaz worked tirelessly to resolve various issues in the city. Flooding had been one on-going problem in that community, with major floods leaving the city's residents flooded out of their homes on numerous occasions. Commissioner Diaz selflessly helped those most affected by the devastating floods by joining the Sweetwater Police Department in the streets to help evacuate those residents who lived in the hardest hit areas.

He also spent countless hours lobbying in Tallahassee and Washington, DC, successfully acquiring the funds necessary for a Comprehensive Street Drainage Project. He continues to work with the local and state emergency management teams, as well as the South Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to avoid future flooding. He was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to the Everglades Restoration and Eco-System Task Force, where he is having an impact on any suggested regulations that could adversely affect West Miami-Dade's water levels.

In the fall of 2000, the city of Sweetwater began work on the first phase of the Comprehensive Street Drainage Project to alleviate flooding. The second phase has begun and the third phase is on the drawing board. FEMA is also starting a project brought to Sweetwater by Commissioner Diaz to elevate homes above flood levels.

As Mayor of Sweetwater, Commissioner Diaz maintained a balanced budget while in office from 1999 to 2002, and aggressively pursued the annexation of areas north of the city for a better mix of residential and commercial areas.

He also improved the way of life for Sweetwater residents by developing more youth and elderly programs. As a county commissioner, he will continue his efforts to improve living conditions for residents of west Miami-Dade and all of Miami-Dade County. Shortly after being elected to the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, County Manager Steve Shiver appointed Commissioner Diaz as Chairperson of the International Trade Consortium, a committee created to increase the county's trade and commerce opportunities with markets in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

He is the Chairperson of the Incorporation and Annexation subcommittee, which is charged with the responsibility of developing short- and long-range plans regarding incorporation and annexation and forwarding policy recommendations to the Budget and Finance Committee.

As Vice-Chair of the Environment and Government Operations Committee, he deals with flooding and water management issues such as dredging contracts, storm water utility, recovery and mitigation.

Commissioner Diaz is also a member of the Board of County Commissioners Transportation Committee, the Budget and Finance Committee.
