Info | A lifelong Democrat, John Lewis switched parties to run for Congress in 1998 against Democratic Rep. John Lewis of Atlanta. The two are not related. Challenger Lewis said he decided to change parties only after local Democratic officials "gave me a rough deal" when he told them he was considering running against Lewis in the Democratic primary. Challenger Lewis complained that Rep. Lewis had been ineffective during his six terms in Congress, citing a paucity of legislation sponsored by the congressman. Lewis insisted he was not trying to take advantage of his name similarity with the congressman. "You can ask any man or woman on the street of Atlanta and they know me by my name and face," he said. "He's the one who's been taking the benefit of my good name."
