InfoRebeca Sosa was first elected to the District 6 seat of the Miami-Dade County Commission in June, 2001 and without opposition was reelected on September 5, 2002. Since her election to the Board of County Commissioners in 2001, Commissioner Sosa has submitted legislation designed to improve the quality of life for the residents of her district and Miami-Dade County. Since her inception to office, Commissioner Sosa has initiated many positive changes in District 6 including: Resolution establishing a Motorcycle Emergency Response Team (MERT), as a pilot program, to decrease response time, increase patient survivability, and increase availability of Advanced Life Support (ALS) Resolution urging U.S. Congress and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to perform field monitoring, before implementing the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) assuring the protection of Urban and Agricultural Users, Flood, and Natural Environment Resolution urging Florida Governor Jeb Bush and the state legislature to convene a statewide task force that would determine the rising cost of homeowner's insurance premiums
Resolution prohibiting Price-Gouging Consumer protections under a State of Emergency Assisted in lifting testing requirements for mechanics with over 20 years of professional experience Participated in initiation of Florida's Department of Transportation project aimed at cleaning up graffiti, garbage, and overgrown shrubs from highway overpasses, bridges, and concrete slopes around West Miami-Dade.

Commissioner Sosa is a member of the Environment and Governmental Committee. She is also the Vice-Chair of the Economic Development and Human Services Committee, Chair of the Procurement Management Subcommittee and is member of the Budget and Finance Committee.

Prior to Miami-Dade County, Commissioner Sosa served as the Mayor of the City of West Miami for seven years. Her leadership resulted in the city's recovery from a 52% budget deficit, thus removing the city from the State Governor's Emergency list. She is also proud of securing more than $5 million in grants for capital improvement projects for the City and improving its drainage and parks systems.

Commissioner Sosa's civic activities are extensive. They include serving as the First-Vice-President of the Miami-Dade League of Cities, Chairing the West Miami Financial and Budget Committee, the Miami-Dade Coalition for Community Education, and the West Miami Hurricane Preparedness Committee. She is on the Board of Trustees of Coral Gables Hospital and is part of the Mayor's HealthCare Access Task Force. In addition, she has been a member of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Bilingual Task Force, the Governor's Commission for the Everglades Restoration, the Revision Committee for the Miami-Dade County Executive Mayor Form of Government, the Legislative Committee of the Miami-Dade County Public School System, the Hispanic Women Chamber of Commerce, Hands in Action, Women in Government (WIG), Anti-Graffiti Task Force, and the National Association of Latino Elected Officials.

Commissioner Sosa graduated summa cum laude from Biscayne College, now Saint Thomas University, with a B.A. in Elementary Education and the University of Puerto Rico, with B.A. in Secondary Education. The State of Florida certified her in Elementary Education and ESOL Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages. She has been an educator for more than 23 years and is currently a teacher-trainer for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Born in Camaguey, Cuba, Commissioner Sosa has been happily married to her husband, Armando Sosa for the past 26 years, and is the proud mother of Armando, Jr. and Veronica.
