| Info | With a pledge to continue his focus on the war against terrorism and our national defense, strengthening America�s homeland security and revitalizing the country�s economy, Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen was sworn in as a member of the 108th Congress on January 7, 2003, his fifth consecutive term as the Representative of New Jersey�s 11th Congressional District.
In the 108th Congress, Congressman Frelinghuysen will continue to serve on the powerful House Appropriations Committee where his seniority and experience have earned him the Chairmanship of the District of Columbia House Appropriations Subcommittee.
In addition to his Chairmanship, Frelinghuysen also continues to serve on critical Appropriations subcommittees with authority and jurisdiction over the Departments of Defense, and Energy. His Committee work also includes oversight of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Army Corps of Engineer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, NASA, and the National Science Foundation, among others.
Frelinghuysen is well known on Capitol Hill for his fiscally conservative views on government spending and the economy. In fact, his steadfast leadership on an economic agenda that includes tax relief for all Americans, job creation and free trade has earned him praise from national groups including Americans for Tax Reform who presented Frelinghuysen with the �Hero of the Taxpayer� Award. He has also been lauded by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, and for his dedication to strictly limiting government spending he�s earned accolades from Citizens Against Government Waste. He fought for tough new legislation to hold corporate criminals accountable and he helped pass a measure to protect the pensions, 401(k) plans and retirement security of millions of hardworking Americans.
As a veteran himself, and a member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, Frelinghuysen has fought for historic increases in America�s defense budget to ensure that our young men and women in uniform are safe and successful as they continue waging the war against terrorism and are deployed to other critical missions around the globe, in the Persion Gulf and elsewhere. He is also a vocal advocate on behalf of New Jersey�s seven military installations, especially Picatinny Arsenal in his Congressional District, where Frelinghuysen has championed the important work done at Picatinny and has secured funding to ensure it remains the U.S. Army�s premier research and development facility.
The New York Times referred to Frelinghuysen as "New Jersey�s �go-to-guy," because of his solid record of working with the Governor and the New Jersey Congressional Delegation on behalf of the state�s critical priorities. As the state�s senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, he continues to fight for New Jersey�s fair share, a greater return on the tax dollars New Jerseyans send to Washington. He has secured Federal funding to provide more mass transit opportunities for New Jersey�s commuters and has been the driving force behind such vital projects as the Hudson-Bergen Line, the Newark Light Rail and the Lackawanna Cutoff. His efforts have included critical funding to continue modernizing New Jersey�s port. He has championed one of New Jersey�s most important public priorities, preserving open space, by directing Federal funds toward the purchase of thousands of acres in the New Jersey Highlands, expanding acreage at the Morristown National Historical Park, the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and New Jersey�s other national wildlife refuges. These efforts, and his dedication to cleaning up toxic waste at Superfund sites, purchasing wetlands, funding flood protection projects and protecting New Jersey�s beaches, have earned him praise by the League of Conservation Voters and recognition by the Sierra Club.
Receiving a national honor, he has been named a "Champion of Science" for his tireless work on behalf of medical and science research at virtually all of New Jersey�s institutions of higher learning. Building on the success of the most sweeping reforms to education in a generation found in the No Child Left Behind Act, legislation that Frelinghuysen helped pass, improving the educational opportunities of America�s children remains a priority in his work.
Frelinghuysen continues his work to modernize Medicare by providing a prescription drug benefit for older Americans and he has always maintained, and will continue to ensure that Social Security must be protected for current retirees as well as future generations. He has been an outspoken leader on the issue of reforming managed health care, and has voted for the Patient�s Bill of Rights. In his work on the Appropriations Committee, his leadership has resulted in the doubling of the federal research budget to find cures and treatments for all diseases at the National Institutes of Health.
His committee work has also ensured that America�s veterans receive better care at our nation�s VA hospitals, and he pays particular attention to the Lyons and East Orange VA Hospitals which serve veterans in his area of New Jersey. And, to make VA health care more convenient and accessible for northwestern New Jersey�s veterans, Frelinghuysen helped open a new outpatient clinic in Morris County.
While Congressman Frelinghuysen�s work in Washington has received national recognition, back at home he remains focused on providing the best possible constituent services to the families of Morris, Essex, Somerset, Sussex and Passaic counties. He continues to help thousands of area residents each year in resolving issues with federal, state and local government agencies.
He holds regular town hall meetings, visits local school classes each week, attends hundreds of community events and personally responds to over 75,000 letters, emails, faxes and telephone calls each year. Congressman Frelinghuysen�s outreach initiatives include his Youth Advisory Council, Picatinny Advisory Council, Veterans Working Group, Annual Small Business Expo, annual health care symposiums for women and children and much more.
Prior to his election to Congress, Rodney Frelinghuysen served in the New Jersey State Assembly for 11 years, from 1983 through 1994, and was a 3-term member of the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders from 1974 to 1983, serving as Director in 1980.
After graduating from Hobart College in 1969, Rep. Frelinghuysen served in the U.S. Army in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam in the 93rd Engineering Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1971. He is a Member of the American Legion Post 59, Morristown, NJ, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3401, Morris Plains, NJ, and a patron Member of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S., Post 213.
Rodney Frelinghuysen and his wife, Virginia, reside in Harding, New Jersey, with their two children. He was born on April 29, 1946. He is active in a wide variety of private charities and organizations.
