| Info | Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle has been involved in city management and public service for almost 30 years. He is currently serving his seventh term as Mayor of Vermont's largest city.
Now 54, Peter was born in Burlington, raised in Winooski, and attended Rice High School. He received his Bachelor's in Urban Studies from St. Anselm College. After earning a Masters in Public Administration from Syracuse University in 1972, Peter worked as Town Manager of Castleton and as City Manager of Winooski. He also served as Executive Director of the Vermont Department of Sheriffs and State's Attorneys.
Peter Clavelle was appointed as the City of Burlington's Personnel Director in 1982 by then-Mayor Bernie Sanders. In 1983 Peter was appointed as the City's first Director of Community and Economic Development. During six years as Development Director, he developed nationally recognized programs in housing, job creation and training, neighborhood preservation, and waterfront revitalization.
In 1989 Peter was elected Mayor of Burlington. His major accomplishments during two terms as Mayor from 1989 to 1993 include the implementation of community-based policing, the construction of a new sewage treatment system (the largest environmental protection project ever in Vermont), the adoption of a plan for waterfront revitalization, and the purchase of nearly 60 acres of waterfront land for the City's Waterfront Park and Urban Reserve. In 1991 the National Housing Institute recognized Peter as "one of the country's best elected officials when it comes to securing decent housing for all."
In 1993 he founded Burlington Associates, a consulting firm specializing in community development policy and planning for municipal and state governments and non-profit organizations. His consulting work has taken him to Brazil, the Gaza Strip, and Grenada, where he worked and lived with his family for a year. His experience led to his appointment as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Vermont-based Institute for Sustainable Communities, which promotes environmental protection and participatory decision-making in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the former Soviet Union.
Peter Clavelle was elected again in 1995 and re-elected in 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003. He has continued his efforts to achieve sustainable economic development, the long-term vitality of the City's downtown, revital-ization of its waterfront, and an inclusive municipal government representing the interests of ordinary people.
Peter is past President of the Vermont League of Cities and Towns. He served as Chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Task Force on Hunger and Homelessness. He currently serves on the Board of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and chairs their Task Force on Sustainable Development. He also serves on the Board of the Institute for Children, Families, and Education of the National League of Cities.
Peter Clavelle is married to Betsy Ferries, a long-time drug- and alcohol-counselor at Essex High School. Betsy's work focuses on prevention, early intervention, and community building. Peter and Betsy have three teenagers. Luke is a college sophomore; Jae (grade 11) and Will (grade 9) attend Burlington High School.
