InfoA native of North Carolina, Jay was born in Newton and grew up in Lexington, the son of a teacher and Baptist minister. His leadership skills developed early, first as an Eagle Scout, Wake Forest Student Government President, Fulbright Scholar and then as a Managing Director at J.P. Morgan & Co. His love for North Carolina and desire to give back to his home state led Jay to seek a seat in the U. S. House of Representatives. As a proven leader and successful businessman, Jay can make a difference in the lives of the people of the 5th District.
During his seventeen year career in banking, Jay and his family at times lived in New York, Tokyo, and Frankfurt. In order to create jobs, hire people and build businesses for J. P. Morgan, Jay traveled throughout the country and the world. These experiences have given Jay the expertise required to build new businesses and preserve jobs in a complex and globally connected business world. Jay is passionate about applying his expertise to strengthen the economy of the 5th District and create new and better jobs.

Jay has served on the Wake Forest Boards of Visitors and Trustees since 1992. Jay runs his own small business in Forsyth County and is an entrepreneur at heart. He has been active in the community, serving as a basketball and soccer coach, and on the board of the local school his sons attend. Jay is a regular member of the community and involved in education.

Jay believes in the importance of public service. Before pursuing his business career, Jay served as a college intern on Capitol Hill and while in graduate school at Columbia University as an intern for the State Department at the U.S. Embassy in Germany. These and other experiences shaped Jay's support of a strong national defense, at home and abroad, to preserve our way of life in an uncertain world.

Jay and his wife, Jane, have been married for 20 years and have three sons, Cole, Jed and Walker. A member of River Oaks Community Church, Jay is a strong proponent of traditional family values and religious freedom.
