Info | Mrs. Loretta Jones Heard
Longtime Columbus school board member Loretta Heard died Tuesday morning at age 71.
She had not recovered after gall bladder surgery on March 23 and had been in an intensive care facility, said her husband of 45 years, Hubert Heard.
"Her heart stopped beating," he said.
Mr. Heard and his three adult children gathered at the family home in central Columbus Tuesday to plan arrangements.
Visiting hours were to be at Gary Memorial Chapel, 2154 E. Main St., and services at Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church, 1650 Wilson Ave., said the Heard's eldest son, Howard. But dates and times were not known Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. Heard announced in February that she would not seek re-election to a sixth term this fall. She had served on the board since 1982 and was president in 1986 and vice president in both 1985 and 1991.
Her current term expires Dec. 31.
After undergoing dialysis treatments for three years, Mrs. Heard received a kidney transplant in 2004.
She said last February that she was feeling fine and that instead of seeking re-election she wanted to spend time establishing and operating a children's library at her church.
"I want to quit while I'm feeling good," she said.
Her elder son, Howard Heard, said, "She was going to start spending more time with church and with my father.
"My mother was dedicated to children first, and second she was dedicated to all the people in Columbus. Basically everything that she did was what she felt was for the betterment of the people of Columbus."
Superintendent Gene Harris said Heard's "passion for doing the right things for children will forever be her legacy."
"We have lost a great advocate for children and education in the Columbus schools," Harris said. "We are very grateful for the contributions that Mrs. Heard has made to this community."
In 2001, Mrs. Heard said, "I believe in education and I love children."
She advocated successfully for establishment of all-day kindergarten in the Columbus school district..
Prior to 2004, Mrs. Heard often was on the losing side of votes at the board table along with then-member Bill Moss.
"You have the right to vote for what you believe in. I try to represent another side of what takes place," she said in 2001.
Mrs. Heard was employed for many years as a training specialist for Head Start teachers at the Columbus Metropolitan Area Community Action Organization.
A native of Akron, Mrs. Heard attended Actual-Hammel Business College and Akron University. She was a graduate of Akron's South High School.
Along with her husband, Hubert, and elder son, Howard, and his wife, Tracy, of Columbus, Mrs. Heard is survived by her daughter, Lindell of Columbus, and son, Robert, and his wife, Rhonda, of Boston, and their children, Robin, 15, and Royce, 7.
