Info"A South Dakota native, Rick got his start in politics at an early age because his father was the local Democratic chairman. That early exposure to the political process captured his interest. By age, Rick was already working as a volunteer for George McGovern's 1972 Presidential campaign. In subsequent years, Rick estimates he devoted hundreds of hours volunteering on various campaigns.

In 1978, college student Rick met young congressional staffer Tom Daschle at a rally for US Senator Jim Abourezk (D-SD) -- the beginning of a long friendship. Daschle convinced Rick to go to work for his upcoming race for Congress that year. After working as a volunteer in the successful primary (which Daschle won by a razor-thin 14-vote margin), Daschle convinced Rick to take a leave from college to work full-time as his campaign office manager in the general election."
