InfoAlfredo Gutierrez � born and raised in Miami, Arizona � was the first person to declare his candidacy for the 2002 election for governor.

Alfredo, 56, served three years in the U.S. Army and attended Arizona State University. From 1972-1986, he was a member of the State Senate, where he was both the majority and minority leader.

Until recently, Alfredo was president of Jamieson and Gutierrez - the premiere political and public affairs consulting company in Arizona.

Alfredo is the former Chairman of the Procurement Board for Arizona Works, the state�s pilot project for welfare reform, and the Policy Committee of the Violence Prevention Initiative program. He has served on the advisory council of the Greater Black Chamber of Commerce and was a board member of the Phoenix Police Foundation and the Phoenix Library Foundation. He has also been on the Board of Directors of Greater Phoenix Leadership, Kino Institute and the Morrison Institute for Public Policy.

One of the founders of Chicanos Por La Causa and Valle del Sol, two community advocacy organizations in Phoenix, he has also received the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa from ASU for his leadership and contributions to the community - and the Distinguished Citizen's Award from the University of Arizona and its Alumni Association.
