Born in Macon County, Ala., April 9, 1876; moved to Florida with his parents who settled on a farm near Lakeland, Polk County; attended the common schools in Florida; studied law at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tenn., in 1899; was admitted to the bar in 1899 and commenced practice in Lakeland, Fla.; engaged as a fruit grower and owned and edited a newspaper; mayor of Lakeland 1899-1903; member, State house of representatives 1902; member, State senate 1904-1908, serving as president 1905; attorney general of Florida 1909-1913; Governor of Florida 1913-1917; elected in 1916 as a Democrat to the United States Senate; reelected in 1922, 1928, and again in 1934, and served from March 4, 1917, until his death in Washington, D.C., May 8, 1936; chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Treasury Department (Sixty-fifth Congress), Committee on Naval Affairs (Seventy-third and Seventy-fourth Congresses); interment in Roselawn Cemetery, Lakeland, Fla.

Brother of late former State Rep. Worth W. Trammell, D-Gadsen County, who ran unsuccessfully for Governor in the 1924 primary, and who was also a Circuit Court Judge, 11th Circuit of Florida.
