Secretary Bayless is a third-generation Arizonan and is fluent in Spanish. She holds a B.A. in Latin American Studies and Spanish from the University of Arizona and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Arizona State University

Previously, Betsey Bayless served as a member of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors from 1989 to 1997 and chaired the board in 1992 and 1994. She began her career in public service as an intern in the State Personnel Department and has since served in a variety of capacities, including director of the Arizona Department of Administration, acting director of the Arizona Department of Revenue, and assistant director of the Arizona Board of Regents.

Betsey Bayless holds a securities license and served as vice president of Public Finance for Peacock, Hislop, Staley & Given, Inc., investment bankers. She is a member of the board of directors of Childhelp USA, as well as the University of Arizona College of Business & Public Administration, and an advisory board member of ASU West.

Since becoming Secretary of State in 1997, Betsey Bayless has focused on increasing voter registration and participation, implementing electronic government, and on making government more efficient and customer-friendly.

Because Arizona�s Secretary of State is first in the line of succession to the Office of Governor, Secretary Bayless serves as Acting Governor when the Governor is out of state. The Secretary of State�s also serves as the State�s Chief Election Officer.

At the Governor�s request, Secretary Bayless serves as a member of the Governor�s Cabinet.
