InfoRob Hubler was born in Concordia, Kansas on June 6th, 1943, the younger of two sons to Kenneth and Alice Hubler who lived in nearby Minneapolis. At the age of seven, his family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa when his father named minister of Grace Presbyterian Church. Rob graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1961, where he participated in the school’s band and ROTC program. After graduation, Rob worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a car counter, during which he became a member of the Railroad Workers Union.

In 1962, Rob enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he trained at and graduated from its Nuclear Power School and New London Submarine School. He was assigned to three different types of subs: a World War II Diesel, Fast Attack, and Polaris, the latter two being nuclear powered. During his service, Rob received several accommodations, including the Good Conduct Medal and the Vietnam-Era Medal. His duty as a Nuclear Plant Operator helped him reach the rank of First Class Machinist Mate, when he was honorably discharged in 1968. Rob then decided to return to Iowa and enroll in college.

Rob attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa where he studied Political Philosophy, Political Science, and Theology. While at the college, Rob was named to the Dean’s Roll as well as Phi Kappa Phi. He edited the school’s student newspaper, “The Daily Bacon”, and became the Chair for Fairfield Citizens for Peace, a vocal outlet in the community that protested the Vietnam War. In 1971, Rob was honored by the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce with their “Man of the Year” award and graduated Cum Laude from Parsons College with his Bachelor’s Degree.

It was also during his college years Rob met two individuals he credits with being major influences in his political life: U.S. Senatorial candidate Dick Clark, and Tom Harkin, who was vying for Iowa’s U.S. Representative Seat in the Fifth District. Rob became Western Iowa Coordinator of both their campaigns for the 1972 election. While Harkin lost his bid for office, a post he did win two years later and hold until his succession to his current position in the U.S. Senate, Clark was victorious and made Rob his Western Iowa Representative and Legislative Assistant for Transportation and Military issues. He also worked in the area of constituent matters by running Senator Clark’s Mobile Service, touring all 99 counties in Iowa to meet with voters and hear their concerns.

For the 1980 election, Rob served as Campaign Director for Waterloo’s Lynn Cutler in her run for Congress in what was then Iowa’s Sixth District. Unfortunately, Cutler lost to her GOP challenger, mainly due to the euphoria surrounding Ronald Reagan’s Presidential Campaign. It was then Rob considered running for office himself. While living in Clear Lake, he began a campaign to be Iowa’s Third District Representative, along with two other opponents for the Democratic nomination in 1982. However, Lynn Cutler decided to make a run for the same office. In response, Rob dropped out for the sake of party unity and loyalty to his former candidate before the primary election.

At this time, Rob continued to hone his skills in the area of political fundraising. As his success in the practice grew, so did his list of impressive clients. He became the Financial Coordinator for Gloria Steinam’s Ms. Foundation for Women, as well as the Executive Director for her D.C.-based PAC, Voters for Choice. During the 1980’s, Rob raised money for many prominent democrats, including: U.S. Representative John Cavanaugh of Nebraska, Gary Hart’s Presidential Campaign, Roy Romer’s gubernatorial bid in Colorado, and U.S. Senator Paul Simon of Illinois.

While politics has been at the forefront of Rob’s life, another driving force has been his faith. He is always quick to credit this to his father, a Presbyterian minister, his two uncles, both Presbyterian ministers, and his mother, who he describes as being, “a pastor in her own right”. It was their teachings and influences that inspired Rob to take a leave from politics, and enroll at the University of Dubuque’s Theological Seminary in 1989.

After graduating from the Seminary in 1991, Rob went on to pastor Presbyterian Churches in Iowa at State Center, Albion, Maxwell, Quasqueton, and Council Bluffs as well as other in Nebraska, Kansas, and southern Californina. He eventually retired from being a full-time minister in 2000, while living in Pasedena to care for his father until his death in 2001. Rob also took care of his Aunt Jean, who suffered from leukemia and resided in nearby Oceanside. But, he still found time to help others as an instructor for severely disabled childrend at the Training Education and Research Institute, also located in the Oceanside Community.

After his Aunt’s death in 2005, Rob continued to teach at the Institute, but longed to return to Iowa and did so late in the following year. With yet another Democratic defeat in the 2006 election for the state’s Fifth District Representative race, many of his friends and former colleagues encouraged Rob to put his wide range of experience to use for a run at the office. This has resulted in a candidacy that has been considered by many to be the most promising for western Iowa Democrats in years.
