InfoSworn in as a member of the United States House of Representatives on January 3, 2001, Rep. Tom Osborne sits on the Committees on Agriculture, Education and the Workforce, and Resources. A fourth-generation Nebraskan, Rep. Tom Osborne represents Nebraska's Third District. "I am honored to serve the people of Nebraska's Third District," Rep. Osborne states, "and I am committed to bringing their voices to Washington." Rep. Osborne is working to increase economic development in the Third District by making agriculture more profitable, expanding access to and education for high-speed Internet access and strengthening rural education.

In his first term, Rep. Osborne has made several significant legislative gains. First, Rep. Osborne's Mentoring for Success Act amended the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) to establish a national mentoring program. Rep. Osborne's Rural Education Initiative Act Amendment also amended the ESEA reauthorization to allow rural schools to combine selected funds from federal grant money and to establish a baseline of $20,000. Finally, Rep. Osborne introduced the Farmland Capital Gains Equity Act of 2001 to extend the one-time, $500,000 capital gains exemption to the sale of farmland.

From 1972 until 1997, Rep. Osborne served as the head football coach for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. Rep. Osborne retired as the most winning active football coach in NCAA Division I-A. Prior to retiring, Rep. Osborne led the Huskers to three national championships in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

Rep. Osborne and Mrs. Osborne have three children, Mike Osborne, Ann Wilke, Suzie Dobbs, and four grandchildren.

The author of several books, including More Than Winning and Faith In The Game, Rep. Osborne graduated with a B.A. in history from Hastings College in 1959. Following graduation, Rep. Osborne played three seasons in the National Football League. He earned an M.A. in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1963, and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1965.
