Lewis Green Stevenson was the son of Vice President Adlai Stevenson. He worked as a personal aide to his father at different times while he was Vice President and later. He was born in Chenoa, Illinois on August 15, 1868. He attended preparatory school at Phillips Exeter Acadmey in New Hampshire and attended what is now called the Illinois State University at Normal. Lewis was a delegate from Illinois to the 1904 Democratic National Convention in St. Louis. In 1908, Lewis managed his father's unsuccessful campaign for governor of Illinois against incumbent Republican Charles S. Deneen. But even though the Democratic candidate lost, Lewis was considered to be an effective campaign manager since President William Howard Taft carried the state by a margin of over 179,000 votes for the GOP ticket but Deneen's margin was only 23,000. Gov. Edward F. Dunne appointed Lewis as Chairman of the Illinois State Board of Pardons in 1913 and Dunne also appointed him to serve as Illinois Secretary of State following the death of Harry Woods who had been elected in 1912 when Democrats swept statewide due to the split between the Republicans and the Bull Moose Party. Lewis served as Secretary of State from 1913 to 1917. He was married and had two children, one of which was Adlai E. Stevenson, II who was elected governor of Illinois in 1949. Even though he had not been elected to office in his own right, Lewis G. Stevenson was nevertheless a contender in 1928 to run for Vice President on a ticket with New York Gov. Al Smith because of the electoral college importance of Illinois. However, the Democratic convention nominated Sen. Joseph Taylor Robinson of Arkansas instead.
