Info | Graduated from the University of Illinois in 1933 with a degree in Banking and Finance. He served as the Supervisor of the Public Utility Revenue Division before leaving in 1941 to join the US Air Force and finished his service with the rank of Captain. He was the Democratic nominee for Illinois State Treasurer in 1946 but lost by almost 480,000 votes.
From 1947-1965 he engaged in grain merchandising in Bloomington, Decatur, and Lincoln. He served as Assistant State Director of Revenue from 1965-1968. He was the Director of the State Department of Financial Institutions from 1968-1971 and then as Executive Assistant to State Auditor of Public Accounts Michael Howlett from 1971-1973.
He served as Director of Internal Audits for the Illinois Secretary of State's office under Michael Howlett from 1973 tell his death on April 8, 1975.
He was married to Margaret Henson Keys, formally of Anna, Illinois. The two had two sons, Sam, Jr. born in 1948 and Henson, born in 1949.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Lincoln, Illinois from 1919 tell his death in 1975.
