| Info | At 25, Maureen O?Connor was the youngest person ever elected to San Diego?s City Council. A San Diego native, a twin who grew up in a large and relatively poor family, she was a schoolteacher on a political mission. A Democrat in a heavily Republican district and a tireless campaigner, she walked her district in Levi?s and ponytail and beat the ?establishment? candidate Lou Ridgeway. Stepping down in 1979 under a self-imposed two-term limit, she then served on the Port Commission, the Trolley Board and the Crime Commission.
Defeated by Roger Hedgecock in her first bid for mayor (1983), she ran again in ?86 (after Hedgecock resigned under a cloud) and won. During her two terms, Mayor Mo took pride in being ?the people?s mayor??meeting constituents in supermarket parking lots and going undercover among the homeless in Balboa Park. But as the wife of a millionaire?she married financier Bob Peterson in 1977?she also hobnobbed with the city?s elite and vacationed in European capitals.
The deaths of her parents in 1992 and her husband in 1994 kept her profile low for several years, but O?Connor has resurfaced in recent months?taking strong stands on the stadium and convention-center issues and, along with fellow Democrat Senator Barbara Boxer, lobbying for the NEA.
