InfoBorn August 17, 1940, and raised in Erwin, TN, David currently lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with his wife, Lisa. They have two grown children, Karen and Michael.

David received his undergraduate degree at UNC Chapel Hill and then went on to Yale University for a Bachelor of Divinity Degree and a Ph.D. in Political Science. Before being elected to Congress in 1986, David was a professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Duke University.

David currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee, where he was tapped for the new Homeland Security Subcommittee at the start of the 108th Congress. Davids appointment to this important position reinforces his ongoing commitment to international issues and the war on terrorism. He also serves on the VA-HUD (Veterans Affairs-Housing and Urban Development) and Legislative subcommittees. Previously, David served on the House Budget Committee; as current co-chair of the Democratic Budget Group, he remains actively involved in efforts to pass economic proposals that are fair, effective, and fiscally sound.

Davids legislative accomplishments reflect his commitment to maintain and enhance our communitys quality of life. Knowing that thousands of Triangle residents have been laid off as our economy has lagged, David has pushed for an extension of unemployment benefits for people still looking for work. He supports an economic plan that would jump-start our economy and put money in the hands of people who need it most.

Davids constituents also know him as a strong supporter of education, accessible health care, affordable housing, clean air and water, and improved transportation alternatives.
