InfoDEMING, Henry Champion, a Representative from Connecticut; born in Colchester, New London County, Conn., May 23, 1815; pursued classical studies; was graduated from Yale College in 1836 and from the Harvard Law School in 1839; was admitted to the bar in 1839 and began practice in New York City but devoted his time chiefly to literary work; moved to Hartford, Conn., in 1847; member of the State house of representatives in 1849, 1850, and 1859-1861; member of the State senate in 1851; mayor of Hartford, Conn., 1854-1858 and 1860-1862; entered the Union Army in September 1861 as colonel of the Twelfth Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers; mayor of New Orleans under martial law from October 1862 to February 1863, when he resigned from the Army; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1863-March 3, 1867); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of War (Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1866 to the Fortieth Congress; appointed collector of internal revenue in 1869 and served until his death in Hartford, Conn., October 8, 1872; interment in Spring Grove Cemetery.
