Bob Young was appointed Regional Director, Region IV of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development located in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 20, 2005. He serves as liaison to mayors, city managers, elected representatives, state and local officials, Congressional delegations, stakeholders and customers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. He oversees the delivery of HUD programs and services to communities and evaluates their efficiency and effectiveness. He is responsible for all federally funded and insured housing programs, including FHA Mortgage Insurance, Community Planning and Development, Public Housing Programs, and Fair Housing Programs.

Prior to joining HUD, Young held the position as Mayor of the consolidated government of Augusta-Richmond County, Georgia from 1999 to June 20, 2005. During Mayor Young's service, a more than $400 million dollar utilities upgrade was initiated, the rate of job growth increased 11 percent, serious crime was reduced seven points, homeownership rose to 58 percent and the rate of poverty dropped to less than 20 percent. Mayor Young helped successfully guide the city through the DoD Base Realignment and Closure process and the Veterans Administration CARES reorganization. He helped organize the Savannah River Basin Coalition for sustainable preservation of the river corridor.

Mayor Young served as a member of the Advisory Council for the U.S. Conference of Mayors. President George W. Bush appointed Mayor Young to represent the nation's mayors on the Advisory Council for Historic Preservation, where he served from 2001 to 2005. He is past chairman of the Central Savannah River Area Regional Development Center and the Richmond-Burke Job Training Authority.

Before becoming Mayor, Young was news anchor and assistant news director for WJBF-TV in Augusta. He joined WJBF in 1985 after 13 years as news director and reporter for WBBQ Radio in Augusta. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force, also serving in the Military Assistance Command in Vietnam where he was twice awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

Young grew up in Thomson, Georgia. He attended Wofford College and Augusta State University. Bob is married to Gwen Fulcher Young and they have two daughters and six grandchildren.
