InfoBEALE, Joseph Grant, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Allegheny County, near Freeport, Armstrong County, Pa., March 26, 1839; attended the common schools; was graduated from Caton Academy, Turtle Creek, Pa., and from Iron City Commercial College, Pittsburgh, Pa.; during the Civil War enlisted in the Friend Rifles for three months, and later served as captain of Company C, Ninth Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserves, for three years; was taken prisoner and confined in Libby Prison, Richmond, Va., until released on parole; studied law; served as major in the Pennsylvania State Militia; discontinuing the study of law, he engaged in the coal business in the suburbs of Pittsburgh; moved to Leechburg, Armstrong County, in the spring of 1868 and actively engaged in the iron and steel business; president of the Leechburg Banking Co.; elected as a Republican to the Sixtieth Congress (March 4, 1907-March 3, 1909); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1908 to the Sixty-first Congress; resumed his former business pursuits; died in Leechburg, Pa., May 21, 1915; interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
