| Info | Dr. Balraj was born in Salem, India and studied at Women’s Christian College and Christian Medical College Hospital in Vellore, India to become a Medical Doctor and Surgeon. Upon immigrating to the United States in 1966, Dr. Balraj trained in Anatomic Pathology at Akron General Hospital, and St. Luke’s Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio. She did her fellowship in Forensic Pathology at Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office in 1972. She is Board Certified in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology.
In 1972, Dr. Balraj began her work in the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office, as Deputy Coroner and Pathologist. In 1987, she was appointed Coroner of Cuyahoga County after the retirement of Samuel R. Gerber, M.D. Dr. Balraj was elected Coroner of Cuyahoga County on November 01, 1988 and has been re-elected continuously. Dr. Balraj has been involved personally in the investigation of more than 10,000 deaths due to violence or suspected violence. Dr. Balraj is the first woman ever to be elected Coroner of Cuyahoga County. She is also the first Coroner of Cuyahoga County with Board Certification in Forensic Pathology.
Dr. Balraj’s involvement in Forensics and Medicine extend far beyond her Office as Coroner. As Assistant Professor in Forensic Pathology, she has instructed students in Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1973. She also is Director of the Forensic Pathology Fellowship Program at Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office. Other Academic involvement includes her membership in the Cleveland Society of Pathology, the Cleveland Academy of Medicine, and the Ohio State Coroner’s Association. She is the past President and chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Ohio State Coroner’s Association. She has served as chairperson of the legislative committee and currently is a member of the Board of Director’s of Ohio State Coroner’s Association and the Legislative Committee.
A National leader in her field, Dr. Balraj is a member of the National Association of Medical Examiners, and diplomat of American Academy of Forensic Sciences. She serves on the Violence against Women’s Act Subcommittee and the Child Death Review Committee. Dr. Balraj has made many presentations throughout the United States, addressing topics ranging from advances in Forensic Science to domestic violence and child deaths. Dr. Balraj is credited with moving the Coroner’s Office to the twenty-first century. Among her accomplishments are acquiring a State of the Art Building for the Coroner’s Office (moved into the new facility in June of 1999) providing the latest technology and equipment for the Toxicology and Trace Evidence Departments, establishing the DNA Department, setting up Digital Photography Department, Computerizing the entire Coroner’s Office and most recently establishing Brief Grief Counseling Program for the families of the bereaved.
Dr. Balraj resides in Solon, Ohio with her husband, Winfred. Dr. and Mr. Balraj have a son, Vijay, a Columbus, Ohio Neuropsychologist. He and his wife, Monica, have a daughter, Sarina, age four years, and a son, Samir, age eighteen months. She loves to cook, read and travel when time permits. Above all she enjoys spending time with her family.
