Info Councilor Jerry McDermott was first elected to the Boston City Council on December 10, 2002. Jerry is the youngest of ten children and the son of immigrants. He was born and raised in Allston-Brighton, where he now makes his home with his wife Aoibheann and their daughters Aisling and Rory. Jerry is a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School and holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Boston.

It has always been important to Jerry to give back to the Allston-Brighton community. He has volunteered his time to numerous local civic organizations, and continues to be closely involved with groups such as the Ward 22 Democratic Committee, The Allston-Brighton Healthy Boston Coalition, The Brighton Board of Trade, The Oak Square YMCA Steering Committee, Friends of Franciscan Children's Hospital and the St. Elizabeth's Medical Center Perinatal Outreach Committee.

Jerry began his career in public service as a legislative aide to Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy II, and he later worked as an aide to Boston City Council President Bruce Bolling. During his time as an aide, Jerry learned that it takes communication, hard work and commitment to be an effective public servant, and these principles continue to guide him today. Jerry also has valuable experience in the private sector as owner and operated of a family business. Prior to his recent election to the Boston City Council, Jerry owned and operated McDermott Realty, located in Oak Square. His business focused on sales and property management and he had a firsthand view into the struggle that many Boston residents face when trying to find housing in the City of Boston.

Councilor McDermott has made it his focus to ensure that all of his constituents receive the best possible representation possible. He believes in communicating with his constituents, which is why he has enacted an open door policy to his office. He is committed to making his office as accessible to everyone within District 9. In mid-August, he plans to begin online office hours, so that people will have to opportunity to log onto his website and talk with their City Councilor. Jerry continues to work hard for the people of Allston-Brighton, and to provide them with the kind of representation they deserve.
