Elected mayor of Scranton, Pennsylvania in 2001.
Prior to becoming mayor, he served on Scranton City Council for four years and was chairman of its Finance Committee. Running on a platform of fiscal responsibility and government accountability, he was elected with over sixty-seven percent of the vote. The day after the election, he announced a sweeping agenda to transform city government. He pledged that his administration would be comprised of people with high moral and ethical standards and he promised to reverse Scranton’s long decline.
Chris Doherty is a 47 year old father of six children – Chris Jr., a 2005 graduate of Scranton High School; Mike, a junior, and Marie, a sophomore, both at Scranton High School; Lizzy, an 8th grader, and Donna, a 5th grader, both at St. Paul’s; and Hugh, a 3rd grader at St. Clare’s. Chris has been married for 22 years to the former Donna McGuirk. He is the eighth of eleven children of Jim Doherty and the former Grace McWilliams.
Born and raised in Scranton, Chris graduated from Scranton Prep in 1976, where he was a varsity letterman in basketball and cross-country. He earned his B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, and is a partner with his brother Tom in the James A. Doherty Company, Scranton.
