Info | COUGHLIN, Clarence Dennis, (uncle of Robert Lawrence Coughlin), a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pa., July 27, 1883; attended the public schools of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Wesleyan College, Middletown, Conn., and Harvard College; taught in the Wilkes-Barre High School 1906-1910; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1910 and practiced law in Luzerne County 1910-1920; engaged in manufacturing, banking, and the development of real estate in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; member of the committee of public safety of the State and county in 1918; served six years as a member of the commission to revise the penal code of Pennsylvania; chairman of the Republican county committee of Luzerne County 1915-1917; elected as a Republican to the Sixty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1921-March 3, 1923); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of Commerce (Sixty-seventh Congress); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1922 to the Sixty-eighth Congress; appointed judge of the court of common pleas of Luzerne County October 6, 1925, to fill an unexpired term caused by the death of Judge Woodward; elected in November 1927 for a ten-year term and served until 1937; died in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., December 15, 1946; interment in Mount Greenwood Cemetery, Trucksville, Pa.
