| Info | Marc Dann was sworn in as Ohio’s 47th Attorney General on January 8, 2007. As Attorney General, Marc serves as the lawyer for the people of the state as well as its institutions. In their capacity as lawyers for the people, Attorney General Dann and his staff enforce Ohio’s consumer protection laws, regulate charitable trusts, pursue anti-trust and securities fraud actions, battle organized crime, and help governmental entities comply with the state’s open records laws.
As the attorneys for Ohio’s agencies and departments he and his staff litigate on behalf of the state, collect debts, defend the state when it is sued, and provide legal advice to their clients.
The Attorney General’s office also provides criminal justice support services through the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, peace officer training through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission, and task force participation through the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission. When invited by local prosecutors, attorneys from the Attorney General’s Office may, on occasion, serve as special prosecutors in criminal cases.
Attorney General Dann is working hard to strengthen, reinvigorate, and refocus his office and he is succeeding. Since January 8 he has amassed an enviable record of success including his negotiation of a $175 million settlement in the AAL/Time-Warner securities fraud case—the largest settlement of its kind in the history of the state. He moved decisively to protect consumers by clamping down on New Century Financial, a troubled predatory lender that is teetering on the edge of insolvency. He is a leader in the effort to protect Ohio’s kids from sexual predators by working to bring Ohio into compliance with the Adam Walsh law, and he has formed new, innovative partnerships with local law enforcement and prosecutors that are making our neighborhoods safer.
It was his concern for the problems Mr. Dann witnessed and helped to address while in private practice as a Mahoning Valley lawyer that motivated him to enter public service, first as a member of the Liberty Local Schools Board of Education, then as a member of the Ohio Senate and now as Attorney General.
While serving in the Ohio Senate, Mr. Dann fought for additional funding to buy body armor for U.S. troops in Iraq, introduced environmental legislation to place a moratorium on new construction debris landfills, as well as bills to extend unemployment benefits, provide retraining assistance for displaced workers, and protect construction workers by making it illegal to use prison labor on public construction projects. His work on behalf of families and seniors includes opposing the privatization of Social Security and recognizing that grandparents, who are often the primary caregivers for children in our society, need and deserve support from the state.
While he is proud of all his legislative accomplishments, it was his work to expose and end corruption that had the greatest impact on Ohio. Mr. Dann played a critical role in the investigation of “Coingate,” the scandal surrounding the investment of $50 million by the Bureau of Workers Compensation in rare coins peddled by Tom Noe, a long-time fundraiser.
Mr. Dann is married to noted investigative journalist Alyssa Lenhoff. They have a so, Charlie, and two daughters, Mavilya and Jessie.
A Cleveland native, Mr. Dann is a 1984 graduate of the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history. He graduated from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1987 and, after devoting the initial stages of his career to public service, entered private practice in Youngstown, Ohio in 1991.
